History Or Hoax: The Tom Collins

Really, it's the John Collins🤷‍♂️

Ever wondered about the story behind the Tom Collins cocktail and how it got its name? Let's dive into this classic drink's history.

Back in the 19th century, there was a bartender named John Collins working at Limmer's Hotel in London. He was known for mixing a gin punch that became quite popular. The original creation of the cocktail is credited to him.

Now, here's where it gets interesting. In the 1870s, a prank called "The Great Tom Collins Hoax" was making the rounds in New York. People would tell friends that a man named Tom Collins was speaking ill of them at a nearby bar. The unsuspecting individuals would then rush off to confront this fictitious character.

Bartenders, being the witty folks they are, started naming the gin punch after Tom Collins to keep the joke going. So, the drink became known as the Tom Collins, blending John Collins' recipe with the hoax's name.

Over time, the Tom Collins has remained a favorite, especially during the warmer months. Its light and refreshing taste makes it a go-to for many gin enthusiasts.
